I was roving around the net and came up with this article on the Moose.

Winnipeg Sun said:
Alex Auld has answered his own challenge.

After consecutive lopsided losses to the Milwaukee Admirals and Grand Rapids Griffins, the third-year goalie urged his Manitoba Moose to step up their play before it was too late.

And since Tyler Moss was traded by the Vancouver Canucks to the Edmonton Oilers on Feb. 16, Auld is unbeaten in four AHL starts to help the Moose get back into the Calder Cup playoff picture.

Thanks to a break in the schedule, Auld will be fully rested when he makes his fifth consecutive start this afternoon against the Admirals.

"It's what I've wanted my whole time as a pro and now I'm getting it," said Auld, who is 12-11-2 with a 2.47 goals against average and .915 save percentage in 26 Moose games this season. "I just want to continue showing that I deserve it. The team has been doing well and I want to do my job within the team framework."

Athletic therapist Robert Milette, who donned the pads in practice on Friday, was replaced yesterday by Stan (Smokey) Reddick.

Reddick, who helped the Ile Des Chenes North Stars capture the Allan Cup AAA senior championship last season, has been told to be ready to be the backup this afternoon, just in case Rob McVicar encounters any difficulty with his travel schedule.

McVicar played his second consecutive game with the Columbia Inferno of the ECHL yesterday and is scheduled to arrive in Winnipeg at 12:30 p.m. today.

McVicar made 38 saves in Friday night's 9-2 win over the Florence Pride and turned aside 20 shots in a 2-1 loss yesterday afternoon in the rematch.

Moose head coach Stan Smyl said it was important for McVicar to get some work and stay sharp, just in case Auld needs a breather over the final 19 games of the regular season.

Reddick was in goal for only the second time this year. He has been playing in the Highlander League as a defenceman.

"I'm actually leading my team in scoring," said Reddick, whose brother Eldon (Pokey) played with the Winnipeg Jets. "I'm playing defence but I pinch in every chance I get."

LINE JUGGLING: With the return of speedy centre Brandon Reid, Smyl did a little line juggling in anticipation of today's game against the Admirals.

Peter Sarno, who has three assists in four games with the Moose, was anchoring a line with Jason King and rookie Brandon Nolan.

Reid was playing between Justin Morrison and Sean Pronger, Wednesday's overtime hero Pat Kavanagh centred Ryan Ready and Chris Nielsen and Nathan Smith was between Ryan Kesler and Roy.

Captain Dallas Eakins took a veteran's day off yesterday but is expected to play this afternoon.

Coupled with Rene Vydareny's sprained right ankle, the Moose were down to five defenceman for yesterday's practice.

Vydareny, who suffered the injury in Tuesday's game with the Albany River Rats, has responded well to treatment and no longer requires crutches to get around.

He hopes to begin skating again in the next couple of days.

NO IRON MAN: Roy was Manitoba's last chance for the AHL's Iron Man Award.

But when the veteran winger was a healthy scratch on Wednesday, his consecutive games streak stopped at 60.

"I didn't think of it that way," said Roy, who has 11 goals, 22 points and a team-high 145 penalty minutes. "Next time I get in the lineup, it's not going to bother me. I'm going to try and do the same things that I do."

Good to see the Moose putting together a winning streak after so many losses this season. They are in last place in the North Division and need to win 3/4 of the remaining games if they have any hope of getting high enough in the standings to make the playoffs.

Another farm update. The Moose were 1-1-1 last week and are currently holding down the 10th spot and final playoff spot by a single point over Houston in the western conference.

Winnipeg Sun said:
If he wasn't stopping pucks for a living, Alex Auld says he would probably be an architect.

As a goalie with the Manitoba Moose, Auld's sole focus these days is on being the foundation as the primary affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks pushes for a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs.

But in his spare time, Auld is constantly thinking about ways to improve the home in Thunder Bay he shares with wife Melanie.

"I've always sort of liked design and art," said Auld, who is 13-12-2 with a 2.47 goals against average in 28 AHL games this season. "Now that I have my own house, I'm always doing renovations and thinking of new designs. And I'm always watching HGTV (Home and Garden Television) shows and trying to learn."

Auld has been learning plenty since becoming a goalie full-time at nine years of age.

Auld is currently under construction by Canucks goalie coach Ian Clark and Moose consultant Rick St. Croix, but he's also been tutored by former NHLer Andy Moog and legendary Russian netminder Vladislav Tretiak.

"I went to my first goalie school when I was about 10 or 11 and then I went to Tretiak's goalie school in Toronto for three summers," said Auld. "Ian Clark has really simplified things for me and it's been great to have Rick St. Croix on a daily basis to keep things sharp."

Who were Auld's favourite goalies growing up in Thunder Bay?

"I always seemed to like who was playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs because they were the team I watched all the time," said Auld. "Felix (The Cat) Potvin, Allan Bester, Cujo (Curtis Joseph. And as I got older I really learned to appreciate Patrick Roy and realize how great he was.

"And now, there are so many guys but as a fan, Martin Brodeur stands out because he is so clutch in big games. He's a big-money goalie."

During the final 17 games of the AHL's regular season, the Moose are counting on Auld to evolve into that mode and he has embraced the role of the undisputed No.1 goalie since veteran Tyler Moss was traded to the Edmonton Oilers on Feb. 16.

Although he had one of his worst games of the season on Sunday, Auld rebounded by blanking the Milwaukee Admirals on Tuesday for his second shutout in six starts since the trade.

Auld says this is the best he's felt with the Moose in his three seasons with the club.

"It just comes from playing and the added responsibility of being the guy," said Auld. "It's a big challenge and there are a lot of things that go with it. In a way, it's a relief. There is a pressure lifted but also another pressure put on."

Under the Helmet

Chatting with Manitoba Moose goalie Alex Auld:

- Favourite TV show? Seinfeld. I love the way the characters work together.

- Favourite movie? Zoolander. I like both Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, they're pretty funny together if you don't take (the movie) too seriously.

- First job? Working at a meat counter in a butcher shop in Thunder Bay.

- What's in your CD player right now? I've got a little of everything in my six-disc changer. Eminem, Nelly, 50 Cent, Coldplay, Jay-Z's MTV Unplugged and Murphy Lee's new one.

- Any pets? Two dogs. Peanut and Chachi.

- If you weren't a pro hockey player, what would you be doing? I'd like to be an architect, or a construction worker.
