Default Was GoalieGuru somewhat correct?

We have Bryz move to Philly and have a bit of a down year. We see Mike Smith move into the Yotes pipes and see a dramatic rise in his numbers. this leads me to the question. Does the system a team play affect a goalies numbers greatly? or minimally?
Also take a look at Brian Elliot on the blues. Now i don't mean to bring goalieguru back up but i just hope this stimulates some discussion. Are these goalies all this good? or do they benefit from playing in a defensive system?

It doesn't help that Philly's #1 d-man has been out for much of the year.

A lot of outside things are screwing Bryz up. He isn't used to play in a hockey city like Philly. No offense but Phoenix and Anaheim aren't anything like Philly with the media and fan pressure. As Badat has said, it doesn't help that Pronger has been out, he was a steadying force back there. I am hoping Kubina can calm things back there. He is a good shot blocker which is what we need and Grossman is another big guy that can help as well.

The rookies will be back in the AHL where they need to be. They hit a wall. MAB had 5 turnovers in Saturday's game alone. I'm not a Bryz fan right now, but the Flyers have to cut down on turnovers in their own zone. That means forwards and d-men. Both have been guilty of doing this all season.

The team or the vets should see that the goalie is a bit fragile (to put it mildly) and then need to get off to better starts in games. Too many games this year they don't show up in the first period. They need to change that and quick. Lavy's system doesn't help because it's attack the puck and then you leave your d-men stuck with odd man situations.

Here's hoping the new additions help and are a wake up call that the Flyers answer with a couple wins in a row.

Yes. That is true. But it doesn't answer the question of Mike Smith and Brian Elliot putting up amazing numbers.

Also by saying this. Does that mean having an amazing DMan like Pronger on your team cause that big of a change in your goalies numbers?

I mean is pretty obvious that a defense first system is going to help out the numbers of a goalie to a fairly strong degree. Does this mean I think Bryz is a poor goalie and was only doing well because of the system Phoenix plays? No way, he would literally steal games for us at times and the rest of the team wouldn't even help him pack the goods. Part of what helped him other than the system in Phoenix is our goalie coach Sean Burke. Bryz is mentally fragile and Sean did a real good job of helping him with that issue while he was here as well as keeping his physical skills honed. I think Sean has a lot to do with why Mike Smith is playing the way he is. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mike being praised the way Bryz was in a few years. Mike Smith is a good goalie, what phoenix is doing wouldn't be possible if he wasn't, but the system and coaching staff certainly play a large part in why our goalies can do what they do.

Look at the 06 oilers and then the 07-08 oilers after losing Pronger.

Good arguments guys. Great to get something going but let's keep it up. Anything else people want to debate?

And Timonen. Hopefully, the new guys will find their way (Grossman and Kubina) and things will improve. Bryz was good in Edmonton. The team just couldn't get anything past the goalie. Lavy was none too thrilled. Called their effort "horsebleep" in the 2nd period.
