(Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes hope to build on their first win of the season tonight when they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins at Mellon Arena.

After losing their first four contests, the defending champs posted a 4-3 win in Atlanta on Friday. Ray Whitney's goal with 0.5 seconds remaining in regulation propelled the Canes to the win.

Craig Adams had two goals, Eric Staal tallied one and Rod Brind'Amour added three assists for Carolina.

Goaltender Cam Ward stopped 31 shots on 34 attempts for the Hurricanes. Ward has had is struggles, allowing a combined 12 goals in his last three starts.

Carolina took a 3-0 lead in the first period, but the Thrashers came back and eventually tied things late in the third on a Bobby Holik goal.

The Hurricanes play the fourth portion of a seven-game road trip tonight and will visit Tampa Bay on Monday.
