OK people, let's get some action going in this room again.

So what would you think of Gillis if he made the following deal?

To Tampa Bay - R. Luongo, K. Bieksa, 2008 2nd and 5th round picks

To Vancouver - D. Boyle, M. Smith, 2008 1st overall pick (Stamkos)

Since we have Salo already, and a couple of young defensemen that can really shoot the puck in Edler and Krajicek, we don't need another 'bomb' from the point. What we need is someone who moves the puck quickly and efficiently, and who can run the powerplay.

Campbell would be the perfect fit through free agency, and there has been some talk that the Canucks are very interested in John-Michael Liles, and I wouldn't mind that route either. Redden would also be a good fit here.

Besides, Boyle would be the secondary piece in that deal, the primary being Stamkos.
Cambell, yes, Liles, yes, Redden... HELL NO.

Being from Ottawa, I've seen him play ALOT, and he's been on a downhill slope for the past few years, showing no signs of climbing back.

For some reason, he's lost the ability to go tape to tape on the first pass, he seems lost on the power play, his footspeed is getting worst every year, and defensive play has become questionable at best.

For the money he will be asking for, I wouldn't even look at him.

That's just my opinion of course, take it for what it's worth, but I think he would be too big of a gamble for the money he wants.

Well that whole Ottawa team had been lousy last year. Didn't Stillman and Commodore lead their team in points in the post season?

If Redden does go and have a change of scenery with a coach who will light a fire under his ass, he may raise his game again. I don't think it is old age or a lack of talent that has slowed Redden's game down.
Instead of making a move for a big name guys, why not try to see if some defenceless powerplay specialist are still on the free agentcy market, they would be cheaper, and since a majority of your defence is solid in their own end it would not hurt one bit to have a weak defencsive charactor who will play maybe 8-15 minutes a game. A guy like Tverdovsky, or Frank Kaberle, or Berard come to mind.

Also it might be beneficial to shop either the Red Wings or the Ducks and see if Schnieder or Rafalski are in your price range, with Anaheim/Detroit's depth in the defensive position they may come cheap if the right offisive guy is offered.

As for Redden, I would avoid him like the plague, this season was a vast IMPROVEMENT over his last season. SInce Chara has left Redden has been pretty much a no-show and I can only imagine that he is going to be an attitude problem that most wont be able to deal with.

But those are just some of my thoughts on the matter

I've heard Redden is no joy in the lockerroom too....not sure how much water that holds.

I completely agrre with McCabe.

You know, a guy I would love to get here would be Joe Corvo.

He his resonably priced for an offesive defensman.

I know he left Ottawa because he didn't like the pressure of playing for a Canadian team, but if he'd be willing, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Put him as a 5th or 6th defensman cause his defensive play is questionable.

But put him on the 1st powerplay. He has an absolute bomb of a shot, has great speed skating with the puck to gain the zone, and has great pacience with the puck quarterbacking the PP.

But like I said, it would be highly unlikely. But that's the type of player I would bring in.

Interesting, I've always liked Corvo and was surprised when the Sens traded him.

That's fine if we just want to be a team that farts around with a playoff spot. But if we want to be a contender, we need someone that at least resembles a number one defenseman.

Being 'pretty solid' is not good enough. Period.

I've watched a lot of the group here in Vancouver, and this defense is not anywhere close to being what a lot of people in other parts of the league seem to think it is. One of the biggest reasons this team struggled to score in the 07 playoffs was becasue its defense was absolutley dreadful in its puck movement, most especially in breaking out of its own zone. Another big reason was its piss poor powerplay, because its puck movement was slow and inacurate.

And there is that little probelm the D has of staying healthy.

So if we want to settle for 7th to 10th overall and maybe one or two series win per playoff season if we're lucky, by all means...let's cheap out on guys like Corvo, Berard or Kaberle.

Myself, I'm tired of the band-aids. This team has an immediate need for a top pairing defender that can run its powerplay. Fill that need with the best talent available.

As for Redden, I'd be willing to give him a shot. I don't care if he's a nice guy or not. Cliff Ronning is apparently not the best guy in the dressing room, but we didn't have a problem having him here for the better part of a decade. Even came within a win of getting the Cup with him in the room. Linden was a nice guy and never won jack sh1t. Same with Naslund.

When I look at Redden I see a pretty good offensive defenseman that has never been a minus player in his career. Maybe the change of scenery does him some good. And it will send a message to this room that no one gives a rat's ass if you're a nice guy or not. Just do your goddamn job and win hockey games.

I see your point, and say that if we can get a top pairing defenseman, might as well give it a shot.

But Redden is not the answer, he's not a top pair defensman.
He's not any better than our top 4.

So I guess that leaves Campbell. Or some other defenseman via trade.

And I will echo a point you made some time ago about this teams blue line health. Maybe you were right previously when you questioned out teams training staff. Perhaps Gillis would be wise to look into replacing them too!
