(Sports Network) - Cam Ward's spectacular play last postseason, which included two shutouts after taking over for veteran Martin Gerber, anchored the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup.

That's well documented.

However, the judgement of the young netminder was far from over, as he had his entire career in front of him. A big test was to be this regular season, as he was given the No. 1 job from the get-go.

Ward finally posted his first regular season shutout on Thursday, making 20 saves in a 5-0 win vs. visiting Washington. Erik Cole's hat trick also played a key role in the win, as the Canes began a four-game homestand.

Eric Staal recorded a goal and one assist, Scott Walker chipped in with two assists while Trevor Letowski notched a goal in his second game back from a three-week absence.
