Wahl Scores Twice, Chiefs Win 5-2

The Spokane Chiefs pulled within four points of the Tri- City Americans for first place in the U.S. Division on Saturday night in the Arena with a 5-2 win. Spokane is now 30-14-0-3 on the season with 63 points. The Chiefs have two games in hand.

Spokane's Ondøej Roman tallied at 1:21 of the first period on the power play on a rebound of a Jared Cowen shot from the point. It was Roman's fourth of the season. The Chiefs then took a 2-0 lead on a Brady Calla shorthanded goal at 12:34. Drayson Bowman blocked a pass at the Tri-City blueline and then shoveled it ahead to Calla who wristed it in off the post.

The Americans scored at 10:18 of the second period when Brett Plouffe snapped a shot from the right circle to make it 2-1. The turning point came at 19:33 of the second when Mitch Wahl deflected a Bowman pass past Chet Pickard for a two goal Spokane lead. Just 24-seconds later Jared Spurgeon's slap shot found its way past Pickard to give the Chiefs a 4-1 lead after two.

The Americans pulled back within two at 1:58 of the third on an unassisted Spencer Asuchak goal. Just 24-seconds later, Wahl broke in on Drew Owsley, who replaced Pickard at the intermission, and scored his second of the night.

Dustin Tokarski stopped 22 shots for the win, his 21st of the season.

The Chiefs were 1-6 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill.

Spokane will travel to Everett on Wednesday night before returning home on Friday and Saturday night to host Chilliwack and Kootenay, respectively.
