Friday's game to raise awareness for breast cancer
KEARNEY - The Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League announced that Friday's home game against the Waterloo Black Hawks will feature the second annual "Pampered in Pink" breast cancer awareness and fundraising promotion. Storm players and game officials will play a major role in the promotional activities.
As part of the game night theme the USHL game officials will wear special pink and black uniforms to assist in raising awareness for breast cancer. In an effort to raise money the American Cancer Society will facilitate a silent auction for the three officials uniforms throughout the course of the game. Storm fans are encouraged to participate in the silent auction by placing bids on the uniforms. The winning bids will be announced at the conclusion of the game.
Storm players will participate in the promotion as well by displaying pink ribbons on the back of their helmets. The pink ribbon is the signature display item by the American Cancer Society and their effort to raise awareness for breast cancer.
"We have put together a complete game night promotion that utilizes the most visible participants in the athletes and officials," said Greg Shea, vice president of operations. "The game night theme is targeted to build awareness, raise money and generate enthusiasm with our fan base."
In addition to the pink uniforms and pink ribbon visual placements the game will feature many other engaging fan elements including a pre and post-game concert with cancer survivor Nicki Rezac. Along with the special game night concert, a women's only first intermission contest on the ice will feature prize packages consisting of jewelry, grocery shopping spree, restaurant gift certificates and massage therapy package.
The first 100 women in attendance will receive pink roses from SunMart, while all cancer survivors in attendance will receive pink carnations from Floral Expressions. Cancer survivors will be admitted free to the game and recognized during the first intermission festivities.
