Medicine Hat, AB - Medicine Hat Tigers are pleased to announce this morning the acquisition of 19-year-old defenseman MICHAEL SAUER from the Portland Winter Hawks.
In exchange for Sauer, the Tigers have sent two 16-year-old defensive prospects in Patrick Weircoich of Maple Ridge, BC and Lee Morrow of Ponoka, AB to Portland.
"To obtain a player of Michael's caliber, we had to move two good young prospects in Patrick and Lee," said Tigers' general manager/head coach Willie Desjardins. "We wish both players good luck and success in the future with the Winter Hawks' organization."
"Not only are we receiving one of Portland's best players but we are getting a player of great character," stated Desjardins. "Michael is one of the best defenseman in the WHL and knows what it takes to win. This is a very big step in helping our organization to be successful in our conference. We are very exited to have Michael join our organization," concluded Desjardins.
The 6' 3", 205 lbs native of Sartell, MN comes for a very strong sports-minded family. He was drafted by the New York Rangers in the second round, 40th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. His oldest brother Craig, retired recently retired after a five-year career in the National Football League. Brother Kent played for the Winter Hawks in 1999-20 while brother Kurt is currently with the Colorado Avalanche after spending three years with the Spokane Chiefs.
Sauer is expected to join the Tigers for tomorrow night's game in Calgary as the team kicks off the second half of the season with three games in three nights in Calgary, Lethbridge and Swift Current.
