NEW YORK (CP) - The NHL is revamping its weekly player awards, awarding three stars to the top three performers of the week instead of handing out offensive and defensive honours.

Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco was named the first star of the week on Monday, ahead of Chicago Blackhawks winger Martin Havlat and Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin.

Due to the midweek start of the regular season, this week's selections covered action from the opening of the season Oct. 4 through Oct. 15.

Turco has played in each of Dallas' five victories this season, posting a 5-0-0 record, 1.56 goals-against average and .948 save percentage.

Havlat leads the NHL with 10 points (six goals and four assists) in four games.
