I hope they can beat the Sabres tonight, even though they are my two favorite teams in the Eastern Conference. Both teams have been on fire of late.
Thrashers try to prevent Sabres from making history
(Sports Network) - The Buffalo Sabres take aim at NHL history tonight, when the league's remaining undefeated team hosts the Atlanta Thrashers at HSBC Arena.
Buffalo tied the 1993-94 Toronto Maple Leafs as the only clubs in NHL annals to begin a season with 10 consecutive victories after the Sabres knocked off the New York Islanders, 3-0, Thursday at Nassau Coliseum. Maxim Afinogenov posted a goal and an assist while Ryan Miller stopped all 29 shots he faced to record his third career shutout.
Buffalo attained its first 10-game winning streak since January 4-23, 1984. The Sabres also have a team-record 15 straight regular-season victories, last losing April 7 at home to Philadelphia.
Ales Kotalik and Jason Pominville each added goals in the triumph.
The Thrashers are off to a flying start as well, having won seven of 11 out of the gate. Atlanta does come in on a two-game losing streak, however, and suffered a 3-2 shootout defeat at struggling Philadelphia on Thursday.
Ilya Kovalchuk and Bobby Holik each tallied for the Thrashers, whose 17 points after 11 games is the best beginning in franchise history. Johan Hedberg stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced, but was pulled in favor of Kari Lehtonen during the shootout.
Lehtonen allowed goals to Simon Gagne and Peter Forsberg during the shootout, while Flyers netminder Antero Niittymaki turned back two of the three Atlanta skaters to give his team the win.
