NEW YORK (AP) -Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Andy Sutton is out indefinitely because of an ankle injury sustained in practice.

How much time the top-two blue liner will miss is not yet known. Preliminary exams showed a crack, but the extent of the injury wasn't clear.

Sutton is due to have another MRI taken Thursday or Friday once the swelling subsides, general manager Don Waddell said Tuesday night before the Thrashers played the New York Rangers.

"He's out indefinitely. A few weeks for sure," Waddell said.

Sutton collided with teammate Steve Rucchin during practice on Monday and didn't make the trip to New York.

Mark Popovic, who had played in only one game with the Thrashers following his recall from Chicago of the AHL on Nov. 16, took Sutton's spot in the lineup against the Rangers. He was paired on defense with Braydon Coburn.
