WINDSOR, Ont. (CP) - John Tavares exploded for four goals and three assists as the Oshawa Generals beat the Windsor Spitfires 9-6 Thursday in a wild Ontario Hockey League game.
The two teams combined for 10 goals in the first period. Windsor struck the first blow quickly, with Adam Henrique scoring 30 seconds into the game. Keaton Turkiewicz added a second Windsor goal almost seven minutes later and the home side looked in control.
Tavares got his first point of the game midway through the first period. He assisted on Michael Del Zotto's goal as Oshawa reduced the lead to one.
Mark Cundari restored Windsor's lead just 22 seconds later, but Cal Clutterbuck scored short-handed, with an assist form Tavares, to bring Oshawa within a goal again.
Bradley Snetsinger gave Windsor another two-goal lead after scoring on a power play. Oshawa responded with back-to-back goals from Tavares and a power-play goal from Dale Mitchell to take its first lead of the game, 5-4.
Turkiewicz rounded out the scoring in the wild first period with a power-play goal, and the teams went to the dressing room deadlocked at 5-5.
