Petr Sykora has signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers pending a physical, TSN has learned.

Sykora is undergoing an MRI on his groin today and if he passes the physical, an announcement is expected later today.

The unrestricted free-agent forward scored 23 goals with 51 points for Anaheim and the New York Rangers last season.

The 29-year-old was traded by the Ducks in January to the Rangers for Maxim Kondratiev and a 4th round pick in 2007.

Sykora was part of the 2000 Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils.

The Czech Republic native joins a top-six forward unit that includes Ryan Smyth, Shawn Horcoff, Ales Hemsky, Jarret Stoll and Fernando Pisani.

That would be huge for the Edmonton Oilers, and their offence would be much improved.

This is a guy who I was hoping would be in Toronto, but of course, it is not to be.

With all the Oilers have lost, they still look like a team that can make the playoffs. Maybe not go as deep as they did before, but the experience that the players still on the team have gained last year could be huge in pulling out an upset... or 2.

Petr Sykora would be a good signing, especially with the experience he would bring, and it would also give Lupul someone behind so the pressure won't all be on his shoulders.

The Edmonton Oilers have signed free agent forward Petr Sykora to a one-year contract.

Before confirming the deal, Sykora underwent an MRI on his groin on Friday which was followed by the announcement at a news conference in Edmonton.

The unrestricted free-agent forward scored 23 goals with 51 points for Anaheim and the New York Rangers last season. He could be relied upon to fill the void left by Sergei Samsonov, who signed with the Montreal Canadiens.

The 29-year-old was traded by the Ducks in January to the Rangers for Maxim Kondratiev and a 4th round pick in 2007.

Sykora was part of the 2000 Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils.

On the international stage, Sykora has represented the Czech Republic on several occasions, including the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

The Czech Republic native joins a top-six forward unit that includes Ryan Smyth, Shawn Horcoff, Ales Hemsky, Jarret Stoll and newly acquired Joffrey Lupul, who remains unsigned as a restricted free agent.
