Marek Svatos has knocked on wood before, and he still suffered more shoulder injuries. So, forgive the Avalanche right wing if he isn't buying into that practice to ward off bad luck.

Svatos is taking the mental approach - that the shoulder ailments that have plagued him in recent seasons are beyond his control, and all he can do is take it a day at a time and take as good care of himself as possible.

Through the Avalanche's first three games, at least, the surgically reconstructed right shoulder has held up. Not that it is, or ever will be, perfect again.

"I feel the pain once in a while. It's never going to go away," Svatos said Wednesday. "I'm just going to have to get used to it. But other than that, it feels pretty good."
