With one very powerful flick of his wrist Friday night, the newest Devil star did both, connecting on a third-period goal that not only delivered a 5-2 victory over Nashville but also delivered Kovalchuk from his own personal torture chamber. His first goal since being traded to New Jersey on Feb. 4 broke a 2-2 tie and a six-game goal-less streak for a man who makes his living hitting the back of the net. As Kovalchuk pumped his fist in joy, relief washed over his face.

“Oh yeah, for sure,” he admitted afterward. “But we got the win and that’s the most important thing. … It’s nice to get a goal, especially at home. I’m sure the fans expect the goals from me.”
