(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers will aim for their fifth consecutive victory when they battle the Carolina Hurricanes tonight at the RBC Center.

The Thrashers are trying for their first five-game win streak since January 6-18 of last season. At 7-1-1, Atlanta is off to its best-ever start to a campaign.

The latest victory in Atlanta's string came Monday evening at Florida. Ilya Kovalchuk netted a hat trick as the Thrashers rallied from a two-goal deficit to drop the Florida Panthers, 6-3, in the back end of a home-and-home at BankAtlantic Center.

Vyacheslav Kozlov donated four assists and Marian Hossa continued his hot start with a goal and an assist for Atlanta, which has won seven of its last eight contests. Kari Lehtonen made 25 saves in the win.

Meanwhile, the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes are off to a slow start to the year, going 3-4-2 so far. They have dropped two straight games and the most recent setback came Saturday against the New York Islanders. Tom Poti's power play goal, 23 seconds into overtime, lifted New York to the 4-3 victory at Nassau Coliseum.

Trailing 3-2 with 3:10 left in regulation, the Islanders tied the game on a power play when Mike Sillinger's wrist shot from the left circle found the net on John Grahame's glove side. Poti then recorded the game-winner with assists from Alexei Yashin and Miroslav Satan.
