Dallas Select Jamieson Oleksiak With the 14th Overall Pick in 2011 NHL Entry DraftFriday, 06.24.2011 / 9:34 PM / News Dallas Stars

Frisco, Tex. – The Dallas Stars selected defenseman Jamieson Oleksiak (OH-lehk-see-ack) with the team’s first round selection (14th overall) at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft this evening, held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

Oleksiak, 18 (Dec. 21, 1992), spent this past season as a freshman at Northeastern University, where he had a team-best plus-13 rating and was second among defensemen with 12points (3 goals, 9 assists) in 34 games.

The 6-7, 244-pound defenseman was the second-youngest player invited to Team USA’s final camp for the 2011 World Junior Championships. His first chance to represent the U.S. was on the Under-18 team at the 2009 Ivan Hlinka tournament. While his hometown is Toronto, Ontario, he is a dual citizen because his father is from Buffalo.

Oleksiak is a minor hockey product of both the Toronto Young Nationals and Detroit Little Caesars. He also played in the United States Hockey League for the Sioux Falls Stampede and Chicago Steel prior to Northeastern.

A left-handed shot, Oleksiak comes from an athletic background: his father, Richard, lettered in track at Colgate University and is a member of the Nichols School Hall of Fame in football, basketball and track and his older brother, Jake, captained the hockey team while at Nichols School.
