The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-1 Friday night at ShoWare Center.
The T-Birds face the Portland Winter Hawks on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at ShoWare Center. It is Mascot Night at the game and a sell out crowd is expected.
Spokane (29-14-0-3) took a 1-0 lead at 3:33 of the first period on a goal by Drayson Bowman. Brady Calla and Trevor Glass had the assists. The T-Birds tied the game 1-1 at 11:55 of the first on Thomas Hickey's ninth goal of the year. Jim O'Brien sent the puck from the left corner to Prab Rai in the right corner. Rai centered the puck to Hickey in the high slot. Hickey one-timed Rai's pass and beat Spokane goalie Dustin Tokarski low on the glove side.
Spokane outshot Seattle 8-6 in the first period.
The T-Birds outshot the Chiefs 12-11 in the second period but the Chiefs led 19-18 in total shots after two periods.
The Chiefs went in front 2-1 at 4:29 of the third period when Stefan Ullmer scored a power-play goal. Charles Wells was assessed a checking behind major giving the Chiefs the man advantage for five minutes. Jared Cowen and Levko Koper had assists on the goal.
Seattle had a power play in the last two minutes of the game and pulled goalie Jacob DeSerres for a six-on- four advantage. They got several shots on goal but were not able to get one by Tokarski.
Bowman scored an unassisted empty-net goal at 19:55 of the third to seal the win for the Chiefs.
DeSerres made 30 saves on 32 shots and his record is now 10-15-0-0.
Tokarski stopped 28 of 29 shots and his record improves to 20-9-0-2.
