San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Patrick Traverse from the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Mathieu Biron.

Traverse was signed by the Sharks on July 10, 2006 and spent the majority of training camp with the team. He was claimed off waivers by Montreal on September 28, 2006 and has spent the entire season with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League. Playing in all 26 of Hamilton’s games this season, he has posted one goal, four assists and 10 penalty minutes.

A 13-year professional, Traverse has recorded 65 points (14-51=65) points and 113 penalty minutes in 279 career NHL regular season games with Ottawa, Anaheim, Boston, Montreal and Dallas. The veteran blueliner has also notched 149 points (38-111=149) in 447 games at the AHL level.

Traverse will report to Worcester, the Sharks top development affiliate in the American Hockey League, and is expected to be in the lineup tonight in Hartford.

The six-foot-four, 210-pound native of Montreal, Quebec was selected in the third round (50th overall) in 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.
