Senators head coach Bryan Murray continues to encourage Peter Schaefer to use his quick and accurate shot more often.
“He wants me to create more offence, to create more shots,” Schaefer said after today’s practice. “
Playing on a line with Antoine Vermette and Mike Fisher, Schaefer knows Murray is expecting big things from the unit. All three players reached the 20-goal mark last season.
“We just have to keep getting better,” Schaefer says. “Once our power play gets going, lots of guys will get going, too. I want to pull my own weight. It’s normal to want to not let anyone down, but I’m not trying to put pressure on myself. You have to have fun out there.”
Murray envisions Schaefer as a more prominent goal scorer.
“He’s got a great shot. The biggest thing with Peter is to somehow convince him in making the goaltender make a save on a shot. He potentially could score a lot of goals for us.”
With a 2-3-0 record so far this season, Schaefer feels it’s time for the players to calm down and get down to basics.
“Everyone wants the opportunity to put up bigger numbers. We tend to try and do stuff on our own. It’s such a great league, that it makes it hard to do. We have to be relaxed as a team. As we get to know each other on and off the ice, that will add to us getting over this (slump).”
This season, Schaefer has been suffering with a hip flexor injury. He left practice early today as a precaution.
“We want to let it heal up as much as we can,” Schaefer says. “It’s from training camp. There’s been lots of skating.”
Schaefer says despite feeling a little more pain than usual today, the injury won’t keep him out of the lineup when the Senators host the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday. Schaefer has only missed eight games during his last five NHL seasons.
