STRANGE BUT TRUE: Titanic rating for lacrosse
"American Idol" it wasn't, but the Titans, an expansion indoor lacrosse team, pulled off a titanic ratings upset Saturday night by drawing larger TV audiences than the Islanders and Devils.
Their game against the Rochester Knighthawks on SNY attracted 0.14 percent of New York-area homes compared to 0.11 for the Islanders vs. the Sabres on FSNY and 0.01 for Devils-Panthers on MSG.
That last number is astounding even by the meager standards of TV hockey, translating to about 700 homes. In fairness, it is an anomaly; the Devils average an 0.18 rating, up 37 percent from '05-06.
Still, some perspective: Prime-time Yankees telecasts on YES last year averaged 316,000 homes, equal to about 450 Devils-Panthers games.
