The Saskatoon Blades improved their lead atop the East Division as they soundly beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-2.
The opening period was controlled by the Wheat Kings but thanks to great goaltending by Braden Holtby and solid defensive efforts by the Blades, they managed to escape the period with a 1-0 lead. Burke Gallimore scored his 20th goal of the season to join Derek Hulak as the only other Blade to reach the 20 goal mark.
The Blades came out strong in the second period and put up 3 goals and got into 3 fights. Adam Chorneyko had a goal, assist, and fight in the second period. Darian Dziurzynski and Walker Wintoneak also scored in the second period to give the blades a 4-0 lead heading into the final frame.
The Blades power play, which has been strong during the win streak, struck again only 1:32 into the period on a Ryan Funk point shot. Back to back goals by Jay Fehr cut the lead to 5-2, but Travis Toomey finished off a beautifully executed 3 on 2 to make the final score 6-2. The Blades finished a perfect 2 for 2 with the man advantage.
The Blades visit the Swift Current Broncos on Friday before returning home to face the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday at the Credit Union Centre. The Blades will then travel to Moose Jaw on Sunday to take on the Moose Jaw Warriors.
