VANCOUVER -- Should Sami Salo test his sore groin tonight, the pain may not rival the agony of trying to contain Ryan Smyth.

The slippery Edmonton Oilers winger has five goals in his last two games. He also had five goals last season when the Vancouver Canucks managed just six of 16 points in eight meetings with their Northwest Division rival.

"The biggest mistake you can make is to give him space," Salo said of Smyth. "If you leave him alone for a second in front of the net, he's going to deflect it in.

"You've got to be really smart when you're playing against him."

Salo is smart enough to know a groin tweak can morph into a long-term concern.
