The Saginaw Spirit bested the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 3-2 Sunday night. The win moves Saginaw into third place in the OHL Western Conference, with 57 points and a record of 27-17-0-3 (47 GP). The Spirit move past the Guelph Storm, who are sitting in fourth place with 57 points and a record of 26-17-2-3 (48 GP). The night saw defenseman Nick Crawford notching three assists and earning the first star of the game honors, while Tyler Murovich, Barry Sanderson and Chris Chappell all chipped in on the goal scoring front. The game also marked the return of center Daniel Pachis, who missed the first part of the season due to injury.
The Spirit offense came out of the gates strong, scoring two goals in the opening minutes for an early 2-0 lead. Center Tyler Murovich tallied a goal at the 1:15 mark, assisted by winger Joe Pleckaitis and defenseman Nick Crawford (NHL BUFFALO SABRES). Center Barry Sanderson extended Saginaw's lead to 2-0 with a goal at 3:17 in the first, assisted by Crawford and defenseman Brad Walch. The Spirit would continue to dominate in the opening round, with winger Chris Chappell scoring his twenty-fifth goal of the season at the 17:11 mark. Crawford and winger Jordan Szwarz assisted on the power play goal.
Saginaw's division rival didn't give up however, answering the challenge with two consecutive goals. Greyhounds center Carson Dubchak tallied a power play goal 3:46 in the second period, taking the score to 3-1. Winger Tomas Rachunek and defenseman Jacob Muzzin assisted on the goal. The Greyhounds momentum carried into the third period when Muzzin notched a power play marker, assisted by wingers Jordan Nolan and Jamie Haines, 1:47 into the third period. The Spirit blunted the Greyhounds attack however, securing the 3-2 win in regulation.
Spirit goalie Anthony Peters tallied 23 saves on 25 shots while Greyhounds netminder Cody St. Jacques notched 28 saves on 31 shots.
The Spirit host two home games next weekend, Friday against the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors and Saturday against the Greyhounds. Both games start at 7:11 PM.
