LEKSAND, Sweden (AP) - Igor Makarov and Alexei Cherepanov scored goals 1:29 apart late in the first period Wednesday to lead Russia past Sweden 4-2 and into the gold-medal game versus Canada at the world junior hockey championship.
Sweden, playing its first semifinal at the annual event since 2001, led after nine minutes when Jonas Junland's slapshot was deflected between the legs of goalie Semen Varlamov.
Sweden hit the posts three times in the opening 13 minutes, including on a breakaway by forward Nicklas Backstrom, who remained goal-less in the tournament.
That cost them, as Makarov equalized with 3:11 to go in the period and Cherepanov put the Russians ahead 1:29 later. They never trailed again.
Artem Anisinov pushed the lead to 3-1 at 4:16 of the second period and Alexander Vasyunov made it a three-goal lead early in the third.
