...reports indicate he will only agree pending the leafs pay him $2 Million for the signing bonus.

Bryan McCabe isn't going anywhere – until the Toronto Maple Leafs pay him $2 million in an owed signing bonus on Sept. 1.

But, as soon as the Leafs make that payment to McCabe, sources close to the Leafs say he will become part of a trade with the Florida Panthers.

All the pieces of the transaction have reportedly been agreed upon - sources say the Panthers and Leafs have settled on the players involved and McCabe has indicated he will waive his no-movement clause to go to Florida - and the only reason to delay the transaction is to allow Toronto, not the Panthers, to be on the hook for the signing bonus.

Florida would then be on the hook for the balance of McCabe's contract, which will pay him $4.15 million ($6.15 million minus the $2 million dollar signing bonus) this season and $4.15 million in each of the remaining two seasons, although McCabe's salary cap hit for the Panthers will be the same as it was for the Maple Leafs -- $5.75 million.

Leaf sources say there is likely to be another Leaf player going to Florida as part of the package and Toronto is expected to get at least one player back from the Panthers, but Panther defenceman Jay Bouwmeester, the subject of much trade speculation in south Florida, is definitely not involved in any way.

In the past, McCabe has refused to waive his no-movement clause, but Pulver added he believes McCabe's future in Toronto will be resolved before training camp opens, stating "early in September" as a likely target.

"We continue to discuss all options, including staying with the Maple Leafs or the possibility of going somewhere else," Pulver told TSN.

Last season, McCabe scored five goals with 18 assists and minus-2 rating.

Well someone has to pay him, its in the contract. This works out well for all involved.

The workout the deal, it becomes officially after the 1st.

Leafs pay $2 million

Florida is on the hook for 3 years at $4.1 million (cap hit = $5.75)

Leafs clear cap space, Florida (who have no cap problems), gets an offensive Dman at a reasonable price.

Now what can the Leafs throw in to get JBo... anything other than Schenn or Pogge.

I believe Frolik is in the same situation as Wheeler was in Phoenix, maybe the Leafs could land a deal landing the young Czech.
Frolik has already signed with Florida, so no, not the same deal, and they aren't parting with him in any deal where McCabe is the primary.

Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos has learned that the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers have a deal in principle to trade defenceman Bryan McCabe.

Sources say that as part of the deal, the Leafs would get Panthers defenceman Mike Van Ryn.

A delay in the announcement is linked to the Leafs willingness to pick up a $2 million bonus McCabe is due on September 1st. After the payment is made only then will the transaction be accepted by the NHL.

Van Ryn, who played 20 games last season with two assists, has $6.7 million remaining on a two-year deal.

The 33-year old McCabe has struggled with the Leafs ever since signing a five-year, $28.75 million deal in June, 2006.
More like, McCabe has struggled in his own end since they started calling penalties on the can Opener. Offensively, he wasn't bad in 06-07

As a Leaf fan, you'd hope the finishing touches on a JBo trade, but knowing McCabe, he likely wants the Leafs to pay for the move and a years free pass to Disneyworld, or land, whichever is down that way.

Finally. I have been waiting years for this to happen. Good riddance. Dumbest player to ever wear a Leafs jersey. I don't care if VanRyn is even mediocre, it would still be a vast improvement. Maybe this is what Sundin has been waiting for.....
