(Sports Network) - Fans of the Detroit Red Wings had two great reasons to celebrate this past Tuesday. First the organization paid tribute to one of the greatest Wings of all time by retiring the No. 19 jersey of legendary center Steve Yzerman prior to that night's game against the Anaheim Ducks. Then the team honored their former captain by grinding out a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Western Conference's point leaders to cap a truly memorable evening.

Things haven't been so rosy for Detroit in the days since that thrilling win. Earlier on Tuesday, a horrifying incident occurred at the downtown restaurant of defenseman Chris Chelios. Two employees were stabbed to death, presumably by a disgruntled ex-worker that had been fired a few months earlier.

Chelios, who knew both victims well, did not accompany his teammates when the Red Wings embarked on their season-long five-game road swing on Wednesday. The veteran blueliner will remain in Detroit through the weekend to support police and employees of the restaurant. He is expected to rejoin the team for Monday's game at Colorado.

The trip didn't get off to a good start, either, as the Red Wings were pummeled by the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. Detroit surrendered a franchise- record six power-play goals, all of them coming in the final two periods, in a head-scratching 9-4 loss.
