Tired of being stuck by needles and feeling no relief in his lower back, Flyers defenseman Mike Rathje will learn on Monday if he'll need back surgery to repair what is believed to be a herniated disc in his lower back.
Rathje is scheduled to meet with Dr. Scott Rushton at Pennsylvania Hospital, where he will have a dye injected into his lower back and an X-ray taken.
If it is determined Rathje has a herniated disc and will need surgery, he will be sidelined about four weeks, Flyers general manager Bob Clarke said.
If surgery is not required, Rathje would have a fourth cortisone injection and wait up to two weeks before returning to the lineup.
