(Sports Network) - The New York Rangers know they have to pick up the pace in the second half if they want to make the playoffs, but things haven't been going well in that regard over the last few weeks.
The Rangers have 54 points and are currently outside of the top eight teams in the Eastern Conference. If the regular season ended today, the Carolina Hurricanes would be the last team in the postseason with 59 points.
New York has dropped two straight and six of its last nine contests and has just a 7-13-0 record over its last 20 tests.
The Rangers' latest setback came Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that is also fighting at the bottom of the postseason picture with 60 points. The Lightning earned the 3-2 win over New York, as Johan Holmqvist stopped 24-of-26 shots, and Vincent Lecavalier tallied the game-winning goal.
