August 14, 2007 -- Negotiations may have bogged down to bring Mike Peca to the Rangers, but it seems likely the former Sabre and Islander captain will soon join an already formidable arsenal of Blueshirt forwards.

Talks are expected to resume shortly, perhaps tomorrow, aimed at adding the 33-year-old center to a lineup boasting Jaromir Jagr, Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, Brendan Shanahan, Martin Straka, Petr Prucha, Sean Avery and Marcel Hossa.

Peca is an unrestricted free agent from the Maple Leafs and is believed to be focusing on joining the Rangers' charge at the Stanley Cup. He played only 35 games last season, suffering a massive leg fracture that required pins and plates.

Gotta wonder how the Rangers can possibly do this. They are already something like $1.6M OVER the cap. And that doesn't take into account the $2.8M "performance" bonus that Shanny gets for somehow managing to play 15 games. Easy guess that they will dump Kasper and his $3M contract on some dumb GM, like they did with Matt Cullen and the Hurricanes(2.9M a year for 41 points).
This is what makes me hate a team like the Rangers, who can simply outspend 95% of the teams in an attempt to buy the cup every few years. The idea in the CBA was that the majority of teams would be at the midpoint of the salary range, not over the top of it.
