PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. (CP) - The WHL's Prince George Cougars have fired head coach Mike Vandekamp and his assistant Stew Malgunas.

Cougars general manager Dallas Thompson will take over as head coach on an interim basis while the team has not made a decision on a new assistant.

The Cougars have opened the season 5-8-0-2 and are third in the B.C. Division.

"We are committed to getting the team turned around and giving the fans a product that they can be proud of," Cougars president Rick Brodsky said in a statement Thursday. "The one thing we can control is our work ethic and if we commit to never getting outworked good things will happen. We all deserve no less."
