Well NHL came out with the Fines/Suspensions as a result of the Pens/Islanders game on Friday night.
Penguins:
Eric Goddard 10 games for coming off the bench.

Islanders:
Trevor Gilles 9 games for diliberate intent to injure a player with a blow to the head.
Matt Martin 4 games for diliberate intent to injure

$100,000 fine for the Islanders.

Goddard'd 10 was an automatic, you simply cannot leave the bench for any reason, period.

Gilles is one of the longer suspensions that has been handed out laterly. And the statement that went along with it in regards to intenet to injure with blow to the head was big.

Martin, well a good thing he didn't really connect. As fans alot of us have been asking for the leage to penalize in regards to the attempt, so in this case they did. More or less on this would have been okay.

The only thing that I would have tweaked would have been giving Gilles 11 instead of 9 games(Not too big a difference, really). No I'm not being a homer here. Its the message behind the message. They had to give Goddard 10, but in essence with the 9 to Gilles, they've basically told Goddard that he would have been better off staying on the bench and going out on the next shift and attempt and taken a shot at an Islanders head. I don't think that's the message they wanted.

They seem to be able to find guys that though slapshot was an instructional video on how to play hockey so I'd reckon so.

Personally I'm no fan of the Penquins, and feel that sometimes they get the benefit of the doubt too often, but in this, I'm fully on their side. The Islanders reverted to mid 70's hockey and frankly should have had their coach suspended as well for not controlling that bunch. And to have Snow bitch about being fined? Priceless. Even Toronto fires their useless GM's before this joke of a team. Snow should be happy he even has a job. And Gillies....the circus or the KHL awaits you tool. And take Cooke with you.

Yeah, Snow's comments were:
"When I saw the suspensions on both sides and the fines, I was a little bit surprised it was just our club that got fined," Snow said Sunday before the Islanders played at Buffalo. "You can ask the league about it. There's nothing we can do about it but put it behind us and get ready for Buffalo."

Snow said he had no intention to appeal the league's decision, but noted that no Islanders player left the bench to take part in a fight.

"I'm very proud that our team showed restraint," Snow said. "We came to play hockey and obviously, there's a lot of things that happen in the course of a game. I'm proud of the way our team competed, and I'm going to support my guys."

Asked if the punishment was fair, Snow said Campbell had a tough job and he would never criticize him.

"I respect the process," Snow said. "It was a professionally run process."
The bolded part is what really got me. You have a guy trying to punch a guy on the ice after he's already concussed by a leaping elbow. Then he stands at the entranceway to taunt him as he's being attended to. And Garth Snow is proud.

He's probably happy that he could skate long enough to get the guy without falling flat on his face.

Then again, the Islanders record during his tenure speaks for just how much he knows about the game. Guy makes Rejean Houle and Bryan Murray look like freakin genius.

I could be wrong, but what I took from that particular quote was that he was glad nobody on the Isles bench went after Godard when he came off the bench, which could have made it even worse than it was.

But I do agree that Gillies should have gotten more than 9 games. What he did was worse than Godard coming off the bench. But I'm not really surprised they didn't give him more. It is the NHL after all.

^^ This. Gilles needs to get his face knocked in. First he charges at Tangradi targeting his head and gets dropped and decides to get back up and throw punches at him. And I've only seen replays on youtube, but why did Martin do what he did? Not like any reason would make it better, but did Talbot do anything? The intent was certainly there and I would of liked to see a much bigger suspension from this. It was complete s*** and has no place in the league, luckily he didn't fully connect.

On a side note, Haley had a good day in the fight column.

Talbot hit Comeau with a solid body check in the previous game that hurt Comeau, It was a clean hit to the shoulder from the side , but Comeau's neck whiplashed from it and he is out.

Haley's line: 1 NHL game 39 Minutes of penalties.

ECHL Greensboro Generals 2000-2001 season: Gillies played 63 games that year, and had 1 goal, 6 assists, and 303 penalty minutes.

It's good to see that Haley and Gillies's deplorable actions were just an isolated incident, and that the Islanders are signing quality players that have useful hockey based skills.

Also I have a bridge to sell you in Death Valley. It's next to some lovely beachfront property.

If Gillies pulled out a shank and stabbed Tangradi, everyone would say it was justified because "we employ Cooke"

No you would get that when you called out the league for not doing enough to prevent such incidents, while having someone on your payroll doing similar actions with no repercussions.
Just two questions for you:

When did you see Cooke doing what Gillies did to Tangradi?
and
Why do you think Cooke is not playing right now?

If you have Matt Cooke on your team, you have to accept the criticism that is going to come your way.

So people are trying to justify this "game" that took hockey back 50 years by saying that we have Matt Cooke on our team.

I'm running on 18 hours straight, so if this sounds more abrasive then usual....well there it is.

When did you see Cooke doing what Gillies did to Tangradi?
That exact thing? Never. A lot of other goonish ****? Often. Because he doesn't perform the same failure of a Bertuzzi like Gillies the goon did doesn't absolve the fact that Lemieux denouncing other teams while staffing those that are at fault of multiple infractions seems...well I cant' think of a nicer word then hypocritical so there it is.

Why do you think Cooke is not playing right now?
Because he's too stupid to learn from the other three mistakes (that he was caught for)?

You got folks denouncing Limieux's remarks as them being a ringing endorsement for the Islanders sending our the NHl's darkest stars? Awesome, I've met my first Penguins zealot. Good job.

The Penguins lead the NHL in fights, PIMs, majors, and have Matt Cooke on their team, and Mario's crying about this type of play? Of course he was 6'4" 225 and fell every time someone tapped his shin pad. When Cooke himself got nothing for ruining Savard's career with a blatantly dirty hit... of course Mario kept his mouth shut then.

At least now we know where Crosby got his crybabyitis.

The NHL is inconsistent once again! I think Gillies is a disgrace to hockey.

By the way do the Isles have that kind of money?
