Emmerton Named OHL Player of the Week

Toronto - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Kingston Frontenac forward Cory Emmerton is the OHL Player of the Week for the first week of the regular season, ending September 24, 2006. He scored four goals and added four assists for eight points to lead Kingston to two wins, last week.

Emmerton opened his 2006-07 season by scoring two goals and adding three assists to pace the Frontenacs to a 9-5 victory over the visiting Ottawa 67's. Two days later he led Kingston to a 6-3 road win over the Oshawa Generals, scoring two goals and three points. Emmerton was named the first star of the game in both contests.

A second round pick of the Detroit Red Wings, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Emmerton was strong at both ends of the ice. Last season, Emmerton led the OHL with a final plus/minus rating of +37. He has begun this season right where he left off last year by posting a +3 rating in the opening week of the season.

Philadelphia sends Downie back to Petes

Peterborough Petes got a shot in the arm with the return of Steve Downie yesterday.

The Philadelphia Flyers returned their 2005 first-round draft pick to the Petes yesterday. He arrived in time to practice with the club for the first time this season.

Downie, acquired in a blockbuster trade with Windsor Spitfires last year, played three NHL exhibition games for the Flyers. He said he wasn't disappointed to be returned to the Petes; he expected it.

"I was just going there for the experience and to get one step closer to getting my foot in the door," Downie said. "I'm happy to be back. It was exciting to go back in the dressing room and see all the guys again. I'm looking forward to this season."

O'Marra sent back to Otters

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League announced today that Ryan O'Marra has been reassigned to the team from the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League.

The Otters captain is scheduled to arrive in Erie tomorrow. He is also scheduled to skate Tuesday at the Tullio Arena, the first time he has been on the ice since fracturing his ankle during off-season workouts. A date for his return to game action has not been determined.

The 19 year-old Mississauga, Ontario native has been rehabilitating his injury with the Islanders since the beginning of the NHL team's training camp on September 15th.

O'Marra finished second in Otters scoring in 2005-06 posting career highs in every offensive category. He finished his third OHL season with 27 goals and 50 assists for 77 points in 61 games. In 188 career games with the Otters O'Marra has 68 goals and 104 assists for 172 points.

The Otters (1-0-0-1) wrap up a season-opening three-game road trip Friday night when they travel to Kitchener to face the Rangers in a 7:30 p.m. contest. The game can be heard live on 1330 Erie's ESPN Radio and on-line at www.ottershockey.com (presented by the James H. Cross Company) beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 p.m.

The Otters kick off the home portion of their 2006-2007 OHL Regular Season Saturday, September 30th when the London Knights visit the Tullio Arena for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Rangers Acquire Zamec From Toronto

Kitchener, ON: Rangers Head Coach & General Manager Peter DeBoer announced this morning that the team has acquired left winger Adam Zamec from the Toronto St. Michael's Majors.

In exchange for the rights to the six foot Zamec the Rangers have sent their 3rd round pick in the 2008 OHL Priority Selection to Toronto.

Originally the Majors 2nd round pick (27th overall) in the 2005 OHL Draft from the London Jr. Knights, Zamec played in 60 games last season notching 8 points (2G, 6A) and 39 penalty minutes.

Beaulieu comes back a better player

Josh Beaulieu spent almost two weeks in the Philadelphia Flyers' pro camp, the longest stay for any London Knight at a pro camp.

Some would find it surprising Beaulieu spent that long, considering how relatively inexperienced he is, even at the major junior level.

Genie has his wish granted

Andrew Perugini got a taste of the Ontario Hockey League last season, but this year the 18-year-old King City native is getting the main course. With the departure of Dan LaCosta, Perugini is going to be the man in goal for the Barrie Colts this season.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Perugini said. “It’s always good to get to play a lot of games. This year is going to be a big year for the team, and I just want to make sure I’m in there for a lot of the wins.”

Coming into this season, Perugini knew he had the opportunity to take the No. 1 job with the Colts. In order to prepare, he kept himself busy all summer long training and attending goalie clinics to get himself in the best shape and frame of mind heading into training camp.

Sarnia stings Whalers in opener

Trevor Kell scored a hat trick and Steven Stamkos scored twice as the Sarnia Sting defeated the Plymouth Whalers, 7-3, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Friday night in the season opener before 3,614 at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre.

Tomas Pospisil and Danny Anger scored the other Sarnia goals. Dan Collins, James Neal and Andrew Fournier all scored one goal a piece for the Whalers.

Ryan Returned to Attack

Bobby Ryan has been returned to the Owen Sound Attack by the Anaheim Ducks.

He is expected to be in Owen Sound for practice on Tuesday afternoon and in the lineup on Wednesday night when the Attack hosts the Sarnia Sting.
