Oilers slide into Phoenix

(Sports Network) - A pair of struggling teams meet up this evening at Phoenix's Jobing.com Arena, where the Coyotes will play host to the Edmonton Oilers.

Edmonton began the week with a slim lead atop the tightly-packed Northwest Division, but losses in four of its last five games has pushed the club into a three-way tie for second place.

The Oilers just dropped both contests of a home-and-home series with Colorado, with the Avalanche coming through with a 7-6 decision in Alberta on Tuesday behind Andrew Brunette's first career hat trick.

Petr Sykora had a two-goal game for Edmonton, while Raffi Torres and Toby Petersen each finished with a goal and an assist. Dwayne Roloson struggled between the pipes, however, as the veteran netminder stopped only 23 of the 30 shots he faced.

The Oilers, who trail first-place Calgary by a single point at the moment, were dealt a 4-1 setback by the Avalanche on Friday.

Phoenix hasn't managed to get untracked yet this season, as the Coyotes sit in the bottom of the Pacific Division with 25 points. The team hasn't played since suffering a 6-3 home defeat to Calgary on Saturday.

1st Period
Edmonton 19:49, Jarret Stoll 10 (shorthanded) (Marty Reasoner)

2nd Period
Edmonton 7:47, Ales Hemsky 5 (Toby Petersen, Marc-Andre Bergeron)
Phoenix 10:12, Owen Nolan 8 (shorthanded) (Keith Ballard)

3rd Period
Phoenix 3:36, Yanic Perreault 9 (power play) (Ladislav Nagy, Derek Morris)
5:49 to go in the third. At least Edmonton is getting enough shots tonight (29 so far) but taking too many penalties. Good thing Phoenix is only 1-8 on the PP tonight.
As I type that Georges Laraque takes two minutes for hooking. Oilers on PP #6.
1:25 to go in the game still 2-2. Kinda surpised at the goalies tonight. I thought the Oil would let Rolison have a bounce back game and thought the Yotes would continue the Tellqvist Express.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL

Edmonton 18:46, Petr Sykora 15 (Shawn Horcoff, Ales Hemsky)

Right now there's 58 seconds to go Oil up 3-2.
Game over. Oilers take it 3-2. Oil put 31 shots on CuJo tonight. Oil power play was a brutal 0-6 which will continue their downward spin in that category. Penalty killing though they went 7-8 only giving up the third period marker. Face offs they were 33 wins to 29 losses for 53%. Lots of obstruction penalties in this game. Must've been tough refs, very different from the San Jose game currently going on (halfway through and just got it's third penalty of the game).
