EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) - The Edmonton Oilers' big weekend win over the Detroit Red Wings just got very costly.
The Oilers on Tuesday placed veteran left wing Ethan Moreau on injured reserve with a dislocated right shoulder.
Moreau suffered the injury in the final minute of Saturday's 3-1 victory over the Red Wings, throwing a punch at Detroit's Danny Markov after the defenseman knocked down Jarret Stoll with a hard open-ice hit.
The 31-year-old Moreau, who did not dress for Edmonton's 5-2 over Phoenix on Monday, could require surgery to repair the injury, jeopardizing his chances of returning before the end of the regular season.
"Surgery is a definite option right now and it's probably the most realistic one," Moreau told the Edmonton Sun.
