After failing to gain a share of first place in the tightly packed Northwest Division, the Vancouver Canucks will take another shot at moving closer to the top as they visit the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night.

The Canucks (35-25-10) are fourth in the Northwest, one point behind third-place Minnesota and two behind co-leaders Calgary and Colorado with those three teams all in action on Thursday. Vancouver is also eighth in the Western Conference, two points ahead of Nashville.

The Canucks had a chance to move into a tie atop the division Wednesday, but fell 4-1 at reigning Stanley Cup champion Anaheim to halt their three-game winning streak, during which they scored 12 goals.

"I think it was more of a change of pace than anything else," said Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo, who was pulled at 4:03 of the second period after giving up four goals on 19 shots. "The good thing is we play (Thursday) night, right away. So we have a chance to put it behind us right away and focus for tomorrow night's game - which is obviously a huge game for us."

Luongo will likely get his 20th consecutive start, and the Canucks hope he can rebound from Wednesday's subpar performance. That came after he allowed only five goals on 66 shots during Vancouver's three-game run.

He has won his last three starts while posting a 1.95 goals-against average against Phoenix (35-30-5), including a 27-save performance in a 2-1 shootout victory at Jobing.com Arena on Dec. 22.

Luongo hopes to get some scoring help after Daniel Sedin, the Canucks' leader with 26 goals, and Markus Naslund, second with 22, both extended season-high goal droughts to 10 games Wednesday.

Daniel Sedin has five assists in that span and Naslund only one, but neither has found the back of the net since a 3-2 overtime win at Minnesota on Feb. 19.

Daniel Sedin, though, had a goal in the last matchup at Phoenix, but was limited to one shot and an assist in a 4-3 home loss to the Coyotes on Jan. 11. Naslund has only an assist in the last three meetings.

The Coyotes start play 10th in the West, five points back of Vancouver in the playoff chase and hoping to carry some momentum from a 3-2 shootout win over the Ducks on Tuesday. Phoenix rallied from a two-goal, second-period deficit and Radim Vrbata netted the lone shootout goal as the Coyotes improved to 1-2-0 on their five-game homestand.

"This was a huge game and we needed to find a way to get two points," said Coyotes captain Shane Doan, who spurred the comeback with a goal in the second. "When we were down, everyone on the bench was relaxed. We knew how important this game was to us and had to somehow get back in the game."

Doan, who leads Phoenix with 66 points, has been solid of late, scoring a goal in four of the last five games after a seven-game goal drought. The right wing has two goals and five assists in his last five games against the Canucks.

The teams close out their season series at Vancouver on Monday after the Canucks visit Dallas and the Coyotes host Edmonton on Saturday.
Well it will be nice to have a game back on SN, never thought I'd say that. PPV's are a total rip off from a production stand point.

I expect the boys to bounce back with a solid effort tonight.

I'll say 3-1 Canucks.

Forget about the injuries on defense for a moment and check out the numbers in this article...

Don't know what is going on, but I'd suggest it's more than a slump or a bug going around.

The Sedins, Naslund and Pyatt have just one goal combined in their last ten games, and Pyatt hasn't scored since the game in Tampa.

Sure, Naslund had an OK game in LA. But those four are barely even getting any chances these days, so it isn't a slump.

Something has gone wrong with this group as a whole. I don't know if it's a problem with the coach, or if the veteren players on this team have just gotten sick of Dave Nonis' empty promises. Could be some of the vets aren't taking well to Mitchell and Luongo as the new leaders.

Whatever it is, it's not good.

If Nonis hopes to significantly improve this team in the summer, he may have to overhaul this offense to a greater extent than most of us thought. It might very well be time to not only say good-bye to Naslund, but to put the twins on the market as well.

I think this one will be more closer as in 2-1 Nuck's win more likely in O/T. Again the ABBA offensive group (Sedins and Naslund) will play like it is all over and done with in regards to a playoff berth and instead of that Arby's hat floating around their heads replace it with Foppa's Golf course. IMO most Swedish players in the Nuck's history lack the heart and desire to win in the post season - all look like Thomas Gradin the thorn in the teams side. Maybe players with longer history with Naslund and the twins have become accustom to a no worries type of leadership Spazzy has created. I think Nonis will have to make a major overhaul if he wants to be GM for a full season next year.
Just read on the Canucks.com that Ohlund is having surgery.

see canucks.com, I am too upset to even post a link. :frown::cry:cry

Just brutal....:y
They look like they've run out of gas. I don't think they have enough left in them to even hold on to the last playoff spot, even if the Sedins and Naslund break out of this 'slump'.
As I said in the Preds post http://www.hockeyforum.com/vancouver-canucks/47983-canucks-preds-gdt.html#post518309, needed atleast five game win streak before I can determine if the team was just putting out flames created by fans and media for their losing ways. With Ohlund out for the season and the made of glass Salo just about to break again, the blue line offense is thin but not as thin as up front. In the style of the Soup Nazi, "No playoffs for you!".

Rusty, I'm glad you enjoyed that Soup Nazi thing. Did you go off that strange lucky brew on the Duck games? Looking for any reason why the Nucks aren't scoring.
