MINNEAPOLIS (CP) - Notre Dame is No. 1 in U.S. college hockey rankings for the first time, and goaltender David Brown of Hamilton has had a lot to do with the success of the Fighting Irish this season.

Brown, 21, has started all but two of his team's 30 games and has lost only four, compiling a goals-against average of 1.70 and posting a save percentage of .928.

Brown played junior hockey for the Hamilton Kilty Bees before enrolling at Notre Dame. The six-foot, 185-pound goalie was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins, 228th overall, in 2004.

The other Canadians in the Notre Dame lineup are defencemen Wes O'Neill of Essex, Ont., a New York Islanders draft pick, and Brock Sheahan of Lethbridge, Alta.

Jeff Jackson is in his second season as head coach. Jackson was head coach of the OHL's Guelph Storm from 2000 to 2003 and an assistant coach with the Islanders before returning to the collegiate ranks with Notre Dame. He coached Lake Superior State to U.S. titles in 1992 and 1994.

The Fighting Irish are 23-5-2 this season.
