Last night two west coast teams both struggling for playoff positioning battled it out in San Jose.

The Sharks vs the Kings in a california frozen classic.

The match was close all the way through but ended with a 4-3 SJ victory.

" San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Cheechoo tallied a hat trick, including his 40th goal of the season, to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings at HP Pavilion.

Patrick Marleau notched his 29th goal of the season and Vesa Toskala made 19 saves for San Jose, which has won three straight games. Joe Thornton added three assists, including his 70th helper of the season, for the Sharks.

"I thought the maximum we might see out of Cheechoo in a season might be 40 goals, whether that was next year or this year, I wasn't sure," San Jose head coach Ron Wilson said "But he's on a pace now to score 50 goals and that's exactly what we are looking for."

Mike Cammalleri registered a goal and an assist and Mathieu Garon stopped 25 shots for the Kings, who have lost two of their last three games following a five-game winning streak. Eric Belanger and Joe Corvo also scored for LA.

"We've got to find a way to beat them," Cammalleri said. "We can't play hang on hockey. We've got to go out and take it to them and play the game, and make plays and play aggressive and if you play hang on against anybody in this league, they're going to score goals and they're going to beat you so we've got to start playing more aggressive against them."

Los Angeles drew first blood just 54 seconds into the second period after Belanger notched his 15th tally of the season off of a feed from Tim Gleason for a 1-0 lead.

San Jose tied the contest at the 8:10 mark of the middle frame after Cheechoo netted a shorthanded goal after he banked a shot off Garon's skate and in to make it 1-1.

The Sharks took their first lead of the game 3:18 into the third period after Cheechoo backhanded a rebound over the outstretched left pad of Garon for a 2-1 advantage.

San Jose upped its lead 25 seconds later after Marleau's wrister from the left circle beat Garon through the five hole to make it 3-1.

The Kings got back within one 7:26 into the third period after Corvo beat Toskala top shelf glove side with a wrist shot from inside the left circle to make it 3-2.

The Sharks regained their two-goal lead 16 seconds later after Cheechoo collected a rebound and beat Garon glove side with a wrister from the slot for a 4-2 advantage.

Just 29 seconds later, Los Angeles made it a 4-3 contest after Cammalleri beat Toskala with a one-timer from below the right circle.

LA pulled Garon with about a minute left in the contest but did not net the equalizer. "
