Sportsnet.ca -- The National Lacrosse League announced today that it has awarded a franchise to New York City for the 2007 season.

Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City, and National Lacrosse League commissioner Jim Jennings made the announcement at East River Park in Manhattan.

"It is my great pleasure to present New York City's first professional lacrosse team," said Bloomberg. "Showcasing lacrosse on the world's greatest stage here in New York City creates a partnership that will maintain lacrosse's position as the fastest growing sport in America."

The addition of the New York franchise will expand the NLL's membership to 13 teams across North America.

The team will play a minimum of four of its eight home games at Madison Square Garden.

"Having a team in New York City has been a goal of ours for a long time", said Jennings. "To play in New York, the media, entertainment and cultural capital of North America, is a major step forward in our efforts to make this league truly national. I'd like to thank Mayor Bloomberg for welcoming our New York team to the city, and congratulate the gentlemen who will own and operate what will become a key franchise for the National Lacrosse League."

The ownership group for the yet-to-be-named franchise consists of Gary Rosenbach, founder of the Galleon Group, William E. Ford, president of General Atlantic, LLC, Nick Leone, senior managing director at The Blackstone Group, Flip Huffard, senior managing director at The Blackstone Group and Richard Ullmann, president of Four Winds Financial Group, LLC.

"The owners of the expansion New York NLL team are thrilled to bring America's fastest growing sport to the City of New York," said Team president Richard Ullmann. "New York sports fans will now have the chance to see the greatest lacrosse players in the world compete in the world's most famous arena. The fast pace, high scoring action of the NLL is sure to be a success in our great city."

The team plans to conduct a name-the-team contest via its Web site, newyorknll.com

Interesting that they finally made a public display on this team. It was announced about a month ago that they were going back to NYC and into Madison Square. Also the front running nickname for the club is Empire but I'm sure they'll run the contest anyhow to give away some free tickets!

Entry Draft In New York On Sept 13th

August 14, 2006
NLL.com

The National Lacrosse League has announced that its 2006 Entry Draft will take place in New York City on Wednesday, September 13th at 8PM Eastern. The Entry Draft, which will consist of six rounds, will be held in The Theater Lobby at Madison Square Garden. The Theater, located inside MSG, is the host site of the annual NBA Entry Draft and hosted the NFL Entry Draft for several seasons. NLL clubs will be drafting the best young lacrosse talent from US college and Canadian junior lacrosse programs.

The league, which has expanded from eleven to thirteen teams for the 2007 season, recently announced that a New York City franchise would join the league next season. The New York team will play home games at Madison Square Garden. “With the world’s greatest lacrosse players coming to New York City this season, we decided it was the right time to host the draft here in New York, and at Madison Square Garden”, said NLL Commissioner Jim Jennings. “Fans will see the future stars of the game enter the league at our draft, and then return to play at MSG during the upcoming season.”

The expansion New York franchise presently holds the first overall selection in the Entry Draft. By virtue of winning a coin flip against the expansion Chicago Shamrox in June, New York won the right to select first in their choice of the Entry or Expansion Drafts. New York chose to select first in the Entry Draft, and will do so unless they opt to trade the pick prior to the draft.
