ERIE, Pa. (CP) - Nigel Williams racked up his first Ontario Hockey League hat trick as the Saginaw Spirit trampled the Erie Otters 7-1 Saturday.

Saginaw scored consecutive short-handed goals on the same Otters' power play in the second period to highlight a stretch of seven unanswered goals.

The Otters trailed 2-1 in the second when two penalties within a three-second span created a 4-on-3 opportunity. But only the Spirit (22-10-0-2). capitalised on the quality scoring chance.

Garrett Sinfield scored on a short-handed breakaway 4 minutes, 40 seconds into the period for a 3-1 Spirit lead.

With the Otters (8-24-0-2) still on the power play, Patrick Asselin scored on a breakaway at the 6:04 mark. That ended Otters goaltender Jonathan Laniel's night after allowing four goals on 15 shots. Ryan Ludzik replaced him, surrendering three goals on 14 shots.

The Spirit then added two power-play goals by Williams 11:04 into the second period and 6:11 into the third, for a 6-1 lead. Williams has eight goals and 11 points in 13 games since being signed from the University of Wisconsin last month.

Ryan McDonough added the Spirit's third power-play goal with 7:13 left in the game. The Spirit finished 3-for-7 on the power play, compared to the Otters' 0-for-6 showing.
