New NHL Uniforms

I'm having a hard time finding an internet article to post on it but our local paper has the story talking about the NHL moving to those nasty looking form fitting uniforms they trotted out for the public to see a couple years ago at the All Star game.

I find them terrible and just another case of the NHL mindlessly tinkering with what used to be a great league. None of the other big leagues change their rules every year (although the NBA has leaned to that recently...oh wait where did Bettman come from? Oh yeah the NBA).

Just wait a few more years and Bettman will bring back the idea of the two point goal line (he mentioned it in 1994 or 1995...) and that will completely end the NHLs traditional fan base.

Oh gawd you're right! Ahh!
NEW YORK - By Steve Ginsburg

The NHL will break with long-standing tradition next season by ushering in a new streamlined outfit that blends fashion with functionality, Commissioner Gary Bettman said Wednesday.

Bettman said the new-look uniforms, designed over the last two years, will be unveiled at the All-Star game in January.

In an interview with Reuters at the National Hockey League headquarters in New York City, Bettman said the players who have tested it so far "have been thrilled".

While the new tapered uniforms are fashionable, Bettman said they were designed with the players in mind.

"The new uniform takes advantage of developments in new fabrics," he said. "But the change was done not for the stylistic. It was done for performance and safety. It was time. Our basic uniforms haven't changed in 40 years."

NHL teams have worn basically the same outfit, with big square shirts, bulky pads, and wide socks with horizontal stripes since the 1940s.

The new leg pads are designed to stay in place when a player moves and not ride up towards the waist.

"The players will have the ability to have their joints flex and be able to move their arms and legs better than ever before," Bettman added.
Will be displayed at ASG

I love how some anonymous players are "thrilled" with the uniforms. Let's put some names to these guys and ask them directly. When they announced them the first time none of the players wanted to be involved with it so they hired actual models to play the role of hockey player.

They are losing touch...

so what will the uniforms look like exactly? will they be tighter or something?
Much tighter. If they go with their original release it will really change the players look on the ice. However until they address the issue with the lethal should pads I can't see where this increased safety will come from.

How is this man still running the league. He has no sense of the tradition that Hockey or the NHL has. Does anyone out there actually hate the current jerseys? I don't see any suggestions for change anywhere.

The man is not right for this game. Players could just use tape, like they always do. Not only that, but he just suddenly comes up with "oh, and by the way: the jerseys are changing next year".

I mean, who does this guy think he is?

Ridiculous!

I agree with you B-L-A, the man is an idiot. I love the current NHL jerseys and I think every fan out there does to. If he changes the jerseys just based on his own opinion he will be getting alot of hate from many fans.

That was painfully apparent when they dropped the traditional names and went with the geo-friendly names plus NBA style playoffs. Talk about throwing tradition out the window.

I'm actually surprised that they named the goal scorer's trophy the Rocket Richard Memorial Trophy instead of Most Goals Trophy or Top Goal Scorer Trophy.

NEW DUDS Devils GM Lou Lamoriello says the new Reebok uniforms players will wear next season won't be drastically different. Modified from those worn at the Olympics, the pants will feature padding closer to the body for safety and a more streamline look. They'll be less bulky. Jerseys will have a tighter look and will be made of improved synthetic materials.

Maybe they won't be so bad? But I would rather just keep the jerseys they are using currently.

I personally do not like the new jerseys. They look to tight and I don't think you get much movement. They should just stop tinkering with the game just so that Americans will like it more. I say get ride of some of the lower earning teams and put them in Canada. The profits would be through the roof.

How have you seen the jersey? they're unvailing them at the al;-star game. Or are you just basing your opinion on the jerseys that the world junior teams wore or what you think they look like?

i dont like the jerseys, it kinda reminds me of something weird but, if you think about it Canada owns hockey everyone knows it and will always know it, countries like Russia, Finland, Sweden, etc made those weird lookin jerseys, the "tighter" ones and they also changed the way the players look. I think they did that to try and be different from Canada, to try and improve or beat our way/look of hockey. If we switch our uniforms its gonna look like we (canada) are trying to copy them.
