Momentum is gathering for the sale of the NHL's Nashville Predators and possible move to Hamilton.

However, it's clear that the transaction will be far from a smooth ride.

There is already a hint that some within the NHL circles aren't supportive of Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie's attempt to purchase the Predators and move the franchise to Hamilton.

Many of the principals involved aren't talking on the record. Meanwhile, insiders continue to speak anonymously to the media, creating the possibility some of the "sources" are speaking to advance their own causes.

Following is a summation of what has happened so far and the key dates coming up that will likely decide whether the purchase of the franchise takes place and whether it will be moved to Hamilton.

Balsillie has made a formal application to the NHL to relocate the Nashville Predators following a letter of intent he signed last month to buy the financially troubled franchise.

Today (Wednesday) the Hamilton City Council will be meeting to announce a contingency plan with Balsillie, who is co-CEO of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, headquartered in Kitchener-Waterloo.
