The Moncton Wildcats announced today that John Torchetti has been hired as their new head coach and Director of Hockey Operations.

''We've chosen a proven winner,'' said team president Robert Irving. ''Someone who can build on the successes of our past year.''

'Torch' twice was named Coach of the Year, with the Central Hockey League's San Antonio Iguanas in 1994-95 and with the Fort Wayne Komets of the International Hockey League in 1997-98.

Torchetti has ten seasons of coaching experience in the professional ranks. He was the assistant coach to the Tampa Bay Lightning for two seasons and was the assistant coach and head coach of the Florida Panthers for two seasons before the 2004-2005 NHL lockout.

His most recent stint was with the Los Angeles Kings, who brought him in for the last 12 games of the season. His coaching resume also includes time in the East Coast Hockey League, Central Hockey League, International Hockey League and the American Hockey League.
