The long time voice of the Vancouver Canucks, Tom Larsheid, announced last week that he was retiring. The funny thing was the whole week goes by and there's not even a single interview with him on the local sports radio, the TEAM 1040 , who are the Canuck broadcast rights holders.

A story comes out yesterday by Ed Willi...s of the Province newspaper.
http://www.theprovince.com/sports/hockey/canucks-hockey/This+Gillis+sandlot/3357326/story.html

The station spends half the day talking about the Ryan Walter aspect of this story but not a single word about Tom Larsheid. I placed a call to the station asking them to say it wasn't so that Mike Gillis forced Tom into retirement for not being "homer" enough on the broacasts and I was met with a " No comment"

Somebody needs to start giving some legs to this story because it's being surpressed by the local station. Mike Gillis is in charge of the Canucks and may have leveraged Tom Larsheid's early retirement against the Canuck broadcast rights which are up in a couple seasons. No one is asking the Canucks organization anything. Someone needs to help here.

Tommy's getting long in the tooth. Personally I can't stand the guy. He should have stuck with football. Most people I talk to don't really like him either. No big conspiracy just a 70 yr. old retirement nothing more. Dave Tomlinson's going to replace him, about time we got a hockey guy to do hockey. The bigger story here is no more pay per view for the canucks. Hello sportsnet 1! Just my .02

Guess again bro. Tommy knows more about canuck hockey than any person on the planet, living or dead. People who think he doesn't know hockey are so clued out I feel pity for them. Since 1977 Tom has seen every pre-season,regular season and playoff game the Canucks have played.

No conspiracy? just off the top of your head without any thought to it or bothering to read the article hey? thanks for the input.

Accusations have emerged in B.C. media that Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis is responsible for the demise of long-time radio hockey analyst Tom Larscheid.

Announced last week, the retirement of the 70-year-old had been hinted at since the Canucks’ NHL season ended in May – but the decision only was made final after TEAM 1040 program director Robert Gray met with Larscheid last month.

Yet, reports claim that Gillis, miffed at Larscheid, pulled the trigger on his departure after more than three decades calling Canucks games. Not so, Gray says.

“We do the hiring and retiring of our on-air guys,” Gray told Usual Suspects via e-mail. “Dave Tomlinson has always been our guy in the succession plan for [Larscheid] when the timing made sense to make that move. From our strategic planning sessions this summer, we decided it made sense for us to make that transition now – and the Canucks blessed our broadcast plan for the coming year.”

At the time of Larscheid’s departure, Gillis issued a statement saying: “For over 30 years Tom Larscheid brought his unmistakable enthusiasm and passion for Canucks hockey to radio broadcasts each and every night. … Throughout the careers of Stan Smyl, Trevor Linden, Markus Naslund, Roberto Luongo, the Sedin twins and many more, Tom has been an integral part of Canucks hockey and the city of Vancouver since he first began broadcasting games in the 1970s.”

The rumour mill tried to create a different impression. Gillis denies the allegations, and says anyone who’d bothered to call him would have learned the truth.

“The TEAM 1040 have been excellent partners,” Gillis told Usual Suspects, “and the Vancouver Canucks would never presume to tell them their business. They're the professionals. Anyone who says we control the hiring and firing of the TEAM's personnel is clearly unaware of how the business works.”

ah yes , the Team1040 spokesperson and Mike Gillis.

1. Why has no radio appearance been made by Larsheid since the announcement? Not a single interview. Anyone with even basic knowledge of Vancouver sports radio can tell you it's very uncharacteristic .

2. When contacted, the Team1040 on air producer gave a "no comment" as apposed to a "not true"

3. Everyone knew Tommy was in his last days. It doesn't appear that Gillis was prepared to wait.

Where's the counterpoint from Ed Willis who claims from credible sources that confidentiality clauses were signed to keep the facts from getting out?

Seeing every game does not make anyone a know it all! T.L. is a football jock and if it were not for the frugal Griffiths family (the ones who originally hired him at CKNW) getting a color guy to do both football & hockey. The Griffiths also owned the canucks at that time it was a decision dictated by finances and not hockey knowledge. Now that the market requires a younger fresh voice you are siding with ole Wrinkle ranch Tommy. So should we bring back JP to do the lions games as well & maybe McGooch to do the intermissions? Times they are a changing, whether you do or not is your choice. Also not your bro, a lil too old fer that sonny!

Well you're right on top of the ball and on point aren't you? I guess there is nothing wrong with the change being made, even if it was forced by someone who doesn't actually work there. Nothing wrong with the guys on the radio basically going dark on the whole thing. Just because you don't like Tom and have no clue what you're talking about doesn't make it right. Enjoy Tomlinson. You deserve him.

Maybe you don't have the life experience required to know what these kinds of things mean and why it's so lame. Maybe one day someone who has an axe to grind with you will cause you to lose your job and you may feel differently about it.

Does it matter to you that The Canuck GM had the colour guy removed for not being homer enough before he or his actual employer intended? You don't care because he was old and you didn't like him. Obviously context interpretation is not your strongest asset. I'm sure the age you retired has some magical relevance that you will take to your grave.
