WINNIPEG (CP) - Manitoba's provincial election campaign has turned its attention to hockey with the Conservatives promising to bring the NHL back to Winnipeg.

Standing alongside former Winnipeg Jet Thomas Steen, Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen said he'll work with the private sector to bring back the team, who left Manitoba a decade ago.

I wonder if they can do it? It would be so great to have a team back in Winnipeg!!! :thumbsup:

But, I don't think Bettman will allow it! :(

As much as we would love to have an NHL team back in Winnipeg it's simply dreaming at this point. They did build a brand new Arena downtown, but the the buildings capacity is 15,003. This is just simply too small to support a modern day NHL team. Had they built a larger arena there might be serious talk about getting an NHL team back. Winnipeg is simply too small too build another larger Arena so quickly there simply isn't enough money, nor are there enough men or women with the cash to buy and support another team. As much as people talk about it, and chants of Go Jets Go can still be heard aroung Winnipeg, the government screwed up that chance by building the MTS Centre. As of right now they are focused on building a brand new indoor football stadium for the CFL Winnipeg Blue Bombers, so for now these are just election "promises".
