Malkin injured in first pre-season game

MONCTON, N.B. (CP) - Evgeni Malkin put on a brave face at the end of a nighmarish evening, smiling and kidding around with a few teammates before the Penguins left for Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.

''He's trying to stay in good spirits,'' said star defenceman and Malkin's mentor Sergei Gonchar.

The 20-year-old Russian centre suffered what the team called an ''upper body injury,'' possibly his left shoulder, after a violent collision with teammate John LeClair.

Penguins GM Ray Shero said Malkin will be re-evaluated Thursday in Pittsburgh, but could not be more specific on his injury.

''At this point anything else would be speculation,'' Shero said after Pittsburgh's 5-4 pre-season win over Philadelphia. ''We'll see how he feels tomorrow. Frankly I was happy he got up considering the way he went down.''

I saw almost the whole game live, and I couldn't believe it when he went down.

I heard the ice was terrible. It looked like his shoulder/arm, and maybe he was knocked a bit silly when his face hit the ice. Hopefully he'll recover soon.

He relly did look great out there. Pulled off 2 nice dekes, almost scored, and picked up and assist.

Aparently he didn't need to stay in the hospital.

I'm trying to find a clip of the collision, I wanna know if it was a fluke thing or is Malkin a little soft?

Fell very awkwardly and it looked pretty bad, but I doubt it's serious.

Yeah, it was bad. But if he did recover than it looks much worse than it really was from the side angle.

I don't think he's soft though, since he was able to get up.

Yeah that was totally fluke and weird enough that I think a lot of players might get nicked up by that. Enough that I don't think he's soft.

Why would the Sabres have to worry about Malkin? You think they were "worried" about the result of a preseason game?

If your team can't handle the Pens with or without Malkin, then you'd have reason to worry.

The only logical answer is that he fears his favourite team won't be able to compete with the Pens if they have Malkin in the lineup.....pretty weak isn't it?

Malkin's injury to be re-examined Monday

Pittsburgh Penguins injured forward Evgeni Malkin will have his dislocated shoulder re-evaluated on Monday and management hopes to have a better idea of how long he might be out by either Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning.

The rookie forward suffered a dislocated left shoulder during his pre-season debut Wednesday night after colliding with teammate John LeClair during the second period of a 5-4 victory over Philadelphia in Moncton, N.B.

Penguins' Malkin out up to six weeks

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Star Russian rookie Evgeni Malkin may be sidelined up to six weeks.

The Pittsburgh Penguins centre was re-examined by doctors Monday and is not expected to need surgery on his dislocated left shoulder.

Malkin was injured during his first exhibition game last Wednesday night. Malkin collided with teammate John LeClair behind the net during an exhibition game in Moncton, N.B.

If Malkin is out a month, he likely would miss the Penguins' first seven games. A six-week layoff would cause him to miss approximately 10 games.

Surgery likely would have forced Malkin to miss up to two-thirds of his rookie season - a major setback not only to his career but the Penguins' hopes of improving this season following four consecutive last-place division finishes.
