DETROIT (AP) - Roberto Luongo was a smashing success in his debut with the Vancouver Canucks.

Luongo made 27 saves and Sami Salo had a goal and an assist in Vancouver's 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.

The goalie was acquired in an off-season trade with the Florida Panthers along with Lukas Krajicek and a draft choice for Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan Allen and Alex Auld.

"He never looked like he was out of place," said Canucks veteran Trevor Linden, who also scored. "For sure, he always looked like he was in position."

Markus Naslund scored Vancouver's other goal.

Luongo was the biggest difference as Vancouver killed off all nine Detroit power-play opportunities.

I didn't see the game, just the superb goaltending of Roberto Luongo in the highlights.
