Kyle Beach

There is a lot of speculation that 4th ranked Kyle Beach may still be available when the Canucks pick 10th in the draft in Ottawa this June. Other teams may take a pass on Beach because of his lack of maturity. Hockey Canada passed on taking him to the World U-18s for the same concerns.

That said, he is a big scoring forward with a good shot and a mean streak. Take note that although he is listed as a centre, he's been used on the wing in Everett.

So I have a few questions for Canuck fans. If Beach is still sitting there at 10th when the Canucks pick, do you take a chance on his skill and hope that he matures mentally, or give him a pass? There will almost certainly be other players with similar skill sets available that don't come with the risks that Beach comes with.

Brian Burke has gone on record that they would take Beach if he was still available when the Ducks pick. Do you offer Beach up to Burke in a deal? Beach for Perry?

If you were the GM, what would you do?

Here is a brief summary of Beach.

Can't believe we passed on Beach. I think we got a good pick in Hodgson, but I think I prefer Beach's skill set and of course his size.

Hodgson seems like a smart player, but it worries me that he is only an average size player without good speed and short choppy skating strides.

Yeah, mixed feelings here too. However, his Jr point totals put my mind at ease for the moment. Time shall tell.

Beach seemed to me like he could just as easily become a grade A distraction.....perhaps his past is what kept Gillis form committing?

I sure like some of the moves teams have made; Jokinen to the Yotes for Ballard and Boynton??? :dunno: We couldn't have tabled a better offer??? :n

I don't think it was so much a better offer, but what teams want from Vancouver, especially a Panthers team that Nonis made look silly when the Luongo deal fell into his lap.

I think when teams call up Phoenix, Calgary, or wherever else they ask for different assets in an organization. Could the Canucks have made a better pitch than that for Jokinen, they could have. However the players Martin wanted off the Vancouver roster may not have been players Gillis wanted to move for Jokinen. Jokinen was not the guy to give up Kesler and Edler or both Sedins for. Jokinen would have been a fair trade bait for say Daniel and Kevin Bieksa, or Bieksa and Kesler, but two budding stars for one guy who has thrived in a shoot first play defense never division is a steep price.

There are also NTCs to keep in mind here too. If Gillis offered Salo, Bieksa, and a pick for Jokinen, Salo may have said "sorry no deal". Same goes for Ohlund.

You got a point here. I mean I was never really into moving both Twins for Jokinen. That's trading 160 points for 80 to 90....doesn't calculate for me. And Bieksa and Kesler in my mind are the future of this team, not the past.

On another note, Camillarri going to the Flames pretty much sums up Lankows future. Here's a guy who would be a real nice fit in our group...as we've agreed on previously. However I mention it today since I think we might see him the odd man out now in Cowtown. And for the price I don't think you'd err to bring him in.

The Canucks just weren't in a position to take a risk on Beach, certainly not like the Hawks are with a solid group of young forwards already in place. Beach may be a nice compliment to Toews and Kane, but not a player you look to anchor the offense around, which I think Hodgson can be.

Look at it like this. If Beach busts, with the young talent already in place, the Hawks can shake it off and move on. If the Canucks took him and he busted, it could sink Gillis before he he gets started.

In the end, I think Hodgson was simply the next best player on the Canucks' list and that's why they took him.
Hey guys-I have a question about Beach. I watched the draft and they kept mentioning that Beach has attitude problems and "Other" problems and that Team Canada didn't want him. I saw that some of you guys mentioned something about his attitude in the opening posts. I havent had a chance to see him play but I read about what he said to Lucic about being a hunchback. Has he gotten himself into other troubles?
I wouldn't have minded Beach at all, but I think we snatched up the right player in Cody Hodgson.
