Pavel Kubina's life has changed and it has nothing to do with his rapid recovery from a knee injury.

The defenceman's wife, Andrea, gave birth to the couple's first child in the Czech Republic this morning. His much anticipated return to the Leafs blue line will have to wait as coach Paul Maurice has given him grace to be with his new family.

Kubina was slated to return tonight against the Bruins but got the news of the birth just before the morning skate. The Leafs have not officially ruled Kubina out for Saturday's tilt with the Montreal Canadiens.

"That's a long ride," said Maurice. "I don't know if it's go in and kiss the baby and turn around. We might let him sit down and hold it for a while."

Kubina collided awkwardly with Florida's Todd Bertuzzi during the fourth game of the season and was diagnosed with a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Doctors expected him to be out of the lineup for as long as six weeks, but it will have been slightly more than four had he returned tonight.
