GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Phoenix Coyotes General manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have named Keith Gretzky as the club's director of amateur scouting.
The club also announced that they have hired Greg Malone as the team's head eastern pro scout.
''Keith has a professional manner, an eye for talent, understands the game and is dedicated to the future success of the Coyotes,'' said Coyotes' Director of Player Personnel Tom Kurvers.
Gretzky enters his first season as the Coyotes' director of amateur scouting after serving the past five seasons as an amateur scout for the team. Gretzky will be responsible for all amateur scouting and will oversee the NHL Entry Draft for the franchise. He will work closely with Coyotes' Director of Player Personnel Tom Kurvers.
Malone joins the Coyotes after having served the last 16 seasons as the Pittsburgh Penguins' head scout. In that role with the Penguins, Malone was responsible for all of the team's amateur draft selections while overseeing all junior, college, high school and European scouting efforts. He originally joined the Penguins in 1988 and helped engineer their Stanley Cup winning teams in 1991 and 1992.
“Greg Malone is a fine addition to our staff,” said Coyotes Director of Player Personnel Tom Kurvers. “He is well respected among the scouting fraternity and his experience as an NHL player and head amateur scout will make him a reliable pro scout for our team.”
The 39-year-old Gretzky played five seasons in the International Hockey League (IHL) with the Flint Spirits, San Diego Gulls and the Phoenix Roadrunners (28-51-79 in 132 games) and two seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Rochester Americans (11-37-48 in 66 games). Gretzky also played one season in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) with Winston-Salem and played two seasons in Europe with Kettera (Finland) and Ayr in the British Hockey League.
Prior to being drafted by the Buffalo Sabres (3rd round, 56th overall) in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft, Gretzky had a solid junior career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Brantford, Windsor, Belleville and Hamilton. His best season came in 1984-85 when he recorded 31-62-93 in 66 games with Windsor. In 298 OHL games, he collected 113-222-335.
After retiring from professional hockey in 1993, Gretzky turned to coaching and began his career behind the bench with the Tri-City American (WHL) as an assistant coach. After one season with Tri-City, he moved to Bakersfield where he became the head coach of the WCHL's Fog. Gretzky coached three seasons with the Fog (1995-1998) before leaving to coach the Asheville Smoke of the UHL for two seasons (1998-2000). He joined the Coyotes organization in 2001.
Malone played in 11 seasons and 704 career NHL games with the Penguins, Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques from 1976 to 1983, collecting 191 goals, 310 assists and 501 points. He still ranks 11th on the Penguins' all-time list in points (364) and 13th in goals (143). Malone's best season came in 1978-79 when he led the Penguins with 35 goals and 65 points.
